What happened
On February 11, a Boeing 737-7GL operated by Arik Air was flying from Lagos to Port Harcourt with about 80 passengers on board.
During the flight, one engine malfunctioned. The crew decided to divert to the nearest suitable airport, and the aircraft landed safely in Benin. No injuries were reported.
Investigation underway
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched an investigation. Initial assessments indicate significant damage to the affected engine.
A preliminary report is expected within 30 days, while the final report will be released after the investigation is completed.
Can a plane fly with one engine?
According to AirlineRatings, twin-engine aircraft such as the Boeing 737 are certified to safely continue flight and land even if one engine fails.
In such cases, pilots:
• shut down the faulty engine;
• stabilize flight parameters;
• proceed to the nearest suitable airport.
These scenarios are regularly practiced in flight simulators and are part of mandatory crew training.
